To enable international students to deeply experience the charm of traditional Chinese culture and enhance their understanding of Chinese Spring Festival customs, from January 9th to 11th, Liupanshui Normal University organized international students staying on campus during the winter vacation to carry out the activity of Writing Spring Festival Couplets and Sending Blessings for the Year of the Snake at the Faculty Home. The calligraphy teacher gave a comprehensive and detailed explanation, covering the historical origin, cultural connotation, writing characteristics of Spring Festival couplets, as well as correct pen-holding, character structure, and overall layout. The teacher also demonstrated the writing skills of Spring Festival couplets on-site, enabling international students to have a preliminary understanding of this traditional Chinese folk art.
Under the patient guidance of the teacher, international students gradually mastered the writing essentials. Chinese characters with beautiful implications such as Fu (good fortune), Chun (spring), and auspiciousness were born under their pens. Although the strokes were a bit stiff, they were filled with their exploration of Chinese culture and good wishes for the New Year. Hamid, an international student from Afghanistan, said excitedly, I've always been very interested in Chinese culture. I feel really magical to write Spring Festival couplets by myself this time. Although it's a bit difficult to write, I really feel a sense of accomplishment when I see the couplets I wrote. I'm going to take it back and paste it in my room to feel the atmosphere of the Chinese New Year. Hassan, an international student from Chad, said, Through this activity, I not only learned to write Spring Festival couplets but also made many Chinese friends. It's very enjoyable to communicate and learn with everyone. This is an unforgettable experience, and it makes me look forward to my life in China even more. With full harvests and beautiful visions for the New Year, international students are looking forward to spending a happy and peaceful Spring Festival in China.
This activity of Writing Spring Festival Couplets and Sending Blessings is not only a cross-cultural experience activity but also an effective measure and special bond for LNU to promote cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries.
